What can I do to improve MPG?
As posted in another thread I should be taking possession of my 1st Supra this week. I drive about 3 hours a day in highway miles for my job and given the price of gas am concerned about efficiency. I am not a racer so I am willing to give up a little power to get more miles out of a tank. Is there anything I can do, such as changing out the rear end that will up the mileage? (I'm going from a 2.2 L Camry to a 3.0 L automatic NA so I know up front I am looking at a 6 MPG hit from the get go.)
Sorry for leaving out the tech specs. This is a '91 NA automatic. Last edited by finaltable; 05-28-2007 at 12:40 AM. |

there is really no big secret to being fuel efficent, just keep tires inflated to the upper end of the acceptible range as well as keep a clean air filter, and just being gental on the gas pedel on acceleration.

Model and year would be helpful.
If it's N/A you could swap in the LSD from either a pre89 or 89+ Turbo model ad they're both taller. With the pre89LSD you stretch out the power band by about 10% and your speedo will need to be recalibrated for the difference as well. The speedometer drive gear from the R154 doesn't fit the W58. If it's a turbo and it's a pre89 you could swap in the LSD from a 89+. The LSD from the pre89 is 3.91 and the LSD from the 89+ is 3.73. You just need to swap the speedo drive gear in this case to correct the speedometer. As with any car making sure everything is running up to spec will prevent excessive fuel consumption. This includes: spark plugs, plug wires, distributor cap and rotor (N/A only), vacuum hoses, O2 sensor, temp sensors, and so on. Before or as soon as you take delivery of the car check for any diagnostic error codes stored in the ECU. This will give you a heads up if anything's well out of the norm. I should also point out that this car is going to my mechanic before I buy it to get his "okay" to make sure I am not about to buy a car with problems. I expect the car to get a passing grade because the place the current owner has been taking it gets pretty high marks around here.

Good luck with it, keep us posted!
While there are a lot of shops that I know that get "high marks" it's usually the owners who slack or cheap out, killing the car. The owner's the one who beats on the car daily, even a bad mechanic only gets a shot at it every so often. |

I get 22mpg on the highway, and 16mpg in town.
My kids '99 Camry with 2.2L get 30 highway, 20 town. I used to run a bit bigger tire, 255-50 x 16". They are about 1" taller than stock. With them I was getting 24mpg hiway, 17 town. I switched back to stock because it lost some getup and go around town.
