How do I get a key for my '90?
I discovered this evening that the only key I have for my Supra is the valet key which explains why I can't open the hatch with it. How can I get a new one? Does Toyota have key codes for VINs going back that far?

A good locksmith won't have any problem making a master from a valet key. The valet key just has one extra cut to it.
If you can't find a capable locksmith: I think for a '90 the dealership may still be able to cut one from the VIN. Otherwise take the passenger door cylinder to a locksmith. |
I just ran into this same problem for a customer's car last month.
The valet key is missing some cut on it. You can take the car to the locksmith and have a hatch key made without removing the lock. I did that on my 1990 Plymouth Sundance. He took the key and stuck it into the trunk lock, turned it both ways, pulled it out, and using some VERY powerful magnifying glasses to see, cut it from the tiny marks left on the key. |
Most (I'm not saying all, it's been a long time since I've working in that field) older valet keys have an extra cut in the position closest to the tip (some valet keys are a bit shorter than the master). The reason being that it's easier for someone to add a cut to a key then to fill in missing material. Impression cutting is too easy. Typically, when you see a locksmith impressino cutting a duplicate it's because they intentionally undercut the new key to adjust for wear of the old key (this makes for a more solid feeling in the new key).
Regardless, a good locksmith should be able to set you up. |
what do original keys look like from an 87 or just an mkIII in general? Is there any way to get "original looking" keys again?
