Well, if the engine's got a knock, pull it. I'd probably start with the bottom end. Pull the oil pan and inspect the bearing clearances... depending on how bad it is you may spot it right away.

I highly recommend that you locate amd make good friends with a knowledgable MKIII owner in your area who has done a rebuild before. Forums are great for some types of support, but they're no comparison to having someone who knows exactly what they're doing looking over your shoulder.

and what ever happens a very important mod to handle any upgrades is a metal head gasket and arp head studs

I had the same with mine. I bought it and 1 month later it started knocking. It wasthe rod bearings. If it is them in your case then pull the engine and check them make sure the rod bearing caps in the right place,where you pulled them off from. check the main bearing too. Befor you put the new rod bearings on make sure there are no groves in the crank. Make sure you put the caps back in the orignal place they cam from
