Speedometer Does Not Work!
ok i changed my speedo cable both long and small ones and still the speedometer does not work. So would it be my entire cluster? or would the plug be bad on the harness? and if it is the cluster and i have to buy a used one on ebay or whatever, does it matter that the milage on the cluster won't match mine?

The problem with the speedo cables is that if they freeze up they can ruin the gear in the transmission. This gear is made of plastic and gets rounded out in the middle so it is probably bad. You can pick one up at the dealer for fairly cheap, mine was less that 30 dollars and came with a C clip and the oil seals. I had a mechanic crawl under there and change it so I didn't see how it was done.

The speedo drive gear is held in by a little bracket and one bolt. It's cake, but you'll need to drain the tranny first or you're going to end up a whole new level of greasy and smelly. ;)

ok i changed the small one a while ago(like 2 months) but the long one i changed yesterday and it was still good when i took it out but still changed it when it was out anyway. even with the cables still good the speedo just went out one day. so do you still think the drive gear seized up? or possibly something else?

also does anyone have a pic of where it is cuz i have no idea and how much do you think it would be for a shop to do it?

i called toyota and the part cost $26 someting and they said it is $46 if its at the end of the cable and $225 it its in the transmission. so what one do you guys think it is? any help is appreciated thanks.

Its the one at the end of the cable in the transmission, the one the cable connects to.
Pop off the cable and spin it, you should see a slight deflection on the speedometer. You might even try and move it wirh a cordless screwdriver on low speed but Ive allways been able to see something by spinning the cable by hand. |
Another possibility is the speedo itself.
