New the Forum
Just introducing myself, normally im a Nissan guy, but my friend is selling his 89 supra to me for $50, so i couldn't turn that offer down. So i found this place so i can know and research a little more about the car. And just browsing around this site, it's very clear that a good majority of you know your shit. go on any 240sx forum...and all the drift band wagon newbs will be sure to annoy the crap out of you with ridiculously (i cant spell) simple questions and outlandish ideas for 240sx or any car...but i digress...any how the supra is that maroon reddish color, turbo, completely stock....bad things about it...body damage to the rear driver's side corner panel...however that is an easy fix for a buddy of mine...and the car overheats almost instantaneously, so i think it the HG, and also it's an Automatic...but for 50$...not bad eh?

most likely (99%) its a head gasket cuz it is common with the mkiii due to the head bolts being under torqued from the factory. put some pics of it on here. you'll probably want to rebuild the engine or swap it out for another 7mgte and just replace that head gasket on the new one while its out. or go for the 1jz or 2jz. welcome to the forum you'll find a lot of help here.

Woot! Another local! Welcome.
There are a couple possibilities for the overheating. The HG is the more common though. Do a compression test and test the oil and coolant for contamination first though. |

i've seen the car...it's not totally destroyed...i'll have some pics up when i see it this weekend...1jz or 2 jz is out of the question...can't afford it...especially since this is just a side project with my best friend...the car isn't gonna get our full attention...although we plan on using the car for drift and autocross events...well, he'll prolly drift it, cuz i have a better platform for drifting than a supra. my buddy is an MR2 guy...so drifting in that mid-engine car is a little ridiculous. we're prolly gonna end up slowly rebuilding the 7mgte, whenever there is extra money here or there.
but one question...is it worth it to spend the extra money on the r154 tranny or is the other one...the w58? <--the NA 5spd? sufficient?

the r154 transmission is worth it. it handles a lot of power i believe the w58 is capable of handling 350-400 hp maybe. the r154 is better though.
