I Got A Supra!

Hello everyone, im aaron and I live in louisville, ky. Ive been surfing around the supra forums for a while now, learning what i can. I recently purchased a 90 turbo 5 speed with a targa top, silver w/ grey interior..

however, this car needs some serious work. as you can see, it's been tagged in the rear left, but since i've taken that picture, ive gotten a donor rear quart and now im drillin spot welds like a moe.. should have the new(er) one on in about a week...

the car needs a new radiator and im replacing all the seals and gaskets.. maybe the rings while the engine is out. however, I am stumped when it comes to a couple issues i've found with the car. first of all, if you look at this picture, you'll see a circular metal casing that you can see through to the radiator, right in front of the alternator. since i havent really ever spent much time under the hood of a supra, im not sure if there's supposed to be a little fan there or not. is this car missing a fan??

also, Im not sure what the hell is going on here.. as far as i can tell, this is some kind of jerry-rigged egr or o2 sensor blockoff, but i cant tell. there is no doubt supposed to be a hose there.. could someone enlighten me as to what exactly im looking at, and how crucial it really is?

heres another shot..

Thanks to everyone who has taken the time to look through all of this. I know there are some people here who know supras like the back of their hand, and any help or advice you guys can give me would be extremely helpful and much appreciated.

Thanks again guys,

Aaron

aaron those ring on the radiator those are ac fans does the car's ac work?? and there is supposed to be 2 fans and they work together for the ac fans. second the saucer looking thing is not relavent i dont have it on my car and plus i think that is a wastegate diaphragm. and i didnt use it second i bought a parts car supra with the air ride suspension and all that crap. but i have a tailight that you could replace with the one thats broken just let me know.

i think to not use the wastegate diapraghm you will have to have a bov and second the connection where it should go is on the turbo intake piping see where they tried to plug it off with what looks to me a light brown construction paper with a hose clamp around it thats where it plugs into.

so basically what youre saying is this is a very ghetto way of venting to atmosphere? im only planning on pushing about 8-10 psi on this engine, so does that kind of setup make supras bog between shifts? you can hear the blowoff pretty well, so if thats all the guy who had this car before me was going for, id rather just recirculate the boost if it matters performance-wise.. also, my ac doesnt work and theres only 1 fan.. but thats ok as long as its not going to overheat the car.

thanks for your replies man, good to have some knowhow on my side!

Most likely they were just going for the noise. My roommate is a turbo Nissan freak and for some reason he loves that stupid "pssshhh" noise. If you ask me it's annoying and a little too "look at what I can do, mommy."

aaron if you dont want the ac to work i would take all the ac components out of the vehicle ita alot of eight that will be dead weight. and then you can send them my way because im a fat teenager that sweats alot so i want ac :). and second you hear a blowoff sound when you shift if so def get a hose and connect the line agian because with a stock wastegate your not supposed to let it be heard. and second the wastegates function is to reroute all your excess boost back into the turbo so you dont have boost leak. i dont kow the technical term for it is but the wastegate makes all the boost you leave over to go back into the turbo to give you better boost gains. so i would def put the wastegate back together and yes its a cheap way to have a bov.

and thanx for the appreciation of the replies man. i love talking about the car i love.

alright heres one for you guys:

it's a tems car, and i want to lower it... is it possible to lower it with coilovers and keep the stock struts? will the tems system still work? if not, do i need to get a camber kit to replace the tems strut tower module thingies?

anybody know?

thanks!

*update*

ok i went and bought some .75" hose and clamped the "blowoff" off... oh my god, the difference is ridiculous! how could anyone do this and leave it that way?? feels like i just regained 10-20 hp after shifting... sweet

Your missing the little plastic fan on the top one but it looks like the bottom one is intact. Your top motor is there too.

IHateHacks 09-10-2007 09:08 PM

Yes you are missing a fan.

I would hook that stock BOV back up pronto or buy an aftermarket one.

You will hit 8+psi with NO boost controller with a turbo back 3 inch exhaust with no cats, including the o2 sensor housing. Mine hits 9psi with no boost controller no shimmed wastegate and 3" turbo back.

As far as coilovers and TEMS, nope. Coilovers replace your existing struts and are fully adjustable. Buy the coilovers and don't look back. TEMS is 20 year old technology and along with your 20 year old struts and springs, you should replace them. I have TEIN coilovers on my TEMS car and the TEMS lights still work, but they don't do anything. I now have 16 way adjustable struts instead of 3 way.
