the gas struts are supposed to stay open but its common for them to give out on you.

I replaced my gas struts for my hatch during the summer. Doing so helps to raise the hatch on its own after you lift it up about a foot. And I have a stock wing on my hatch as well. Eventually if you don't change it out you will have to start using a broomstick.
