Swapping Trany
I'm thinking of buying a 94 TT but it's automatic i got a good price on it but I really want a 6 speed. Anyone know how hard it would be to swap out the trany? Or if i should just keep looking for one with a 6 speed. This 94 only has 80k and the guy is letting it go for 18k. It's hard to pass up..

http://www.mkiv.com/techarticles/aut...wap/index.html Ime, it'll definitely cost much more than the difference (parts+labor), so you're much better off to keep looking for a 6spd if that's what you need. As an additional item to consider, note that an automatic is significantly more consistent, as well as being significantly faster in the 1/4 mile. Of course, it's also a lot less difficult for the driver. If you want to drag race your 94 TT, you might want to reconsider your desire for a 6 speed. On the other hand, if you want to roadrace (which is what the Mkiv Supra's jza80 chassis & suspension was designed for), I agree a 6 speed is a much better choice. |
tranny swap
I came across a guy, who bought an auto and claimed it was a bad choice, and he spent 19k to replace the auto with a 6 speed tranny. Granted he didn't spend 19k just to replace the auto for a 6 speed cause he had the cash laying around, he screwed up the tranny with an aftermarket turbo. Which is why he told me to look into 6 speed, said the auto can't handle upgraded turbo's. ???? Not sure about the truth in that either.

The upgraded auto tt tranny will handle a small or even mid-size (eg. T67) single turbo and moderate boost levels. For high boost and a big turbo (eg. T76+), you'll need either a 6spd or a TH400. |
