Question love supras, what do i look for in looking/buying one?

so im just new to this website, but i have always loved supras since i was little. what should i look for in possibly buying a 94 supra? im just starting to get into cars more and dont know a whole lot but i know i want to buy a supra at some point. is it smarter to just buy one already tuned up with lots horsepower, or buy a cheaper one and fix it up yourself over some time? what would be easier? what would be cheaper? is it even possible to modify it by yourself unless you already know a tonne about mechanics? i think it'd be sweet to do everything on it yourself but is that realistic? basically i dont know a whole lot except i want to get that twin-turbo 6-speed manual supra at some point. help me!!

If you can find a great deal on one that's been properly upgraded and properly maintained, then you'll probably be very happy with it. Note however, that it will likely take an expert to evaluate how well the upgrades were performed (both from a quality of parts perspective, as well as a quality of installation work perspective).

If you want to do the work yourself, plan on literally months of studying, in order to do the work properly. I'd estimate at least 100-200 hours of heads-down reading & learning. If you're very interested in learning about upgrading (as I was), you'll find the time goes by quickly. On the other hand, if you just want to go fast without doing a lot of detailed work studying and then more careful & methodical hands-on mechanical work to get it done correctly, then it'll be cheaper to find one already upgraded. If you don't mind a lot of extra expense, and you want the upgrades done a very specific way, then count on spending quite a bit of $ to get it complete.

Lastly, note that even if you do all the work yourself, the parts aren't cheap. You're looking at about $10K or so in parts if you're shooting for 575rwhp+...and much more than that if you're going to get an experienced shop to do the install.

NB: Please consider posting any help requests in a new thread instead of asking me for help privately. About 99.9+% of the time, private help requests end up covering great information that could be very valuable to other forum members. If you have a good reason for needing the help request to be private, I'll consider it. If not, then why not give everyone else the opportunity to pitch in too, and/or learn from the information? Remember, there's no such thing as a dumb question. We're all here to help within this family of Supra owners.
