I don't want to start any trouble, I'm just wondering if a 97 or 98 Supra can hold it's own against a 1986 Porsche 944 Turbo.
I have a basic understanding of the older ones {93ish} but I don't see too many of the newer ones near me, so I can't get much info. And now they aren't sold from dealerships anymore, I can't get much info there either. I drive my cars hard through the corners everytime and from time to time I like to reach top speed. I don't street race but from time to time I do accelerate as quickly as possible as well as racing around country/ mountian roads for a couple of hours at a time. Now that you know what the car will be used for, can a 97 - 98 be my new work horse? I like the way they look and I like the specs. {although a little heavy} but the handling/ comfort/ reliability & performance info I seek can only come from owners. I read some threads on this site but I didn't see any real answers. Thanks. Michael |

well... the porsche does have advantages.. no speed cut, and no hp limitations
the mk4 twin turbo stock is fairly impressive 280hp stock @ the engine 1/4 in 14sec apparently or 13's if ur a good driver heh i'm sure you'll find her a fun toy... just upgrade the intake and exhaust and i'm sure you'll have a happy go fast work horse

First of all the 97s and 98s are almost identical to the other year MKIVs. The only difference is minor interior and exterior cosmetics. The engines are exactly the same. The stock US spec motor was rated at 320hp at the crank but most people have see that hp translate to 300rwhp. With minor upgrades you can see 400+ hp without changing the stock turbos or internals. With 400rwhp many guys have see low 12s on the quarter mile, some high 11s. As for comfort the supra is very comfortable and the dash curves around the driver like a cockpit. Since the supra is a Toyota it is very reliable and can go for miles and miles. Handling feels very good and since i have never driven a porche i can not compare. But im sure that whatever your needs are the supra can forfil them.

It would be an upgrade, your car is more along the lines of a modded Mk3 in performance (and they kinda have the same body lines B) )
1986 Porsche 944 Turbo: 0-60: 6.0 1/4 mile: 14.6 1989 Toyota Supra Turbo 0-60: 6.6 1/4 mile: 15.2 1997 Toyota Supra Turbo 0-60: 5.1 1/4 mile: 13.6 I'm unsure of the Porsche's suspension system, but I know the Supras are fully independant, and handle quite well, put some sticky meats on em and they will hold as well as most sports cars. Supras are easily as plush as a porsche, they ride smooth, the interior is nice, and they've had climate control since the 80's as well. About the only thing I can say is look hard on places like autotrader.com and go scope one out and take it for a test drive. You'll be the one that will either fall in love with it or hate it, good luck |
