Default Red button near transmission selector

A friend has recently bought a '94 Supra auto.
He wants to know what the red button near the P on the transmission selector is for.
The button is has some Japanese below it.
He has bought an owner's manual which does show the button in the pics, but does not give any info about the button.
Can anyone tell us what the button is for please?

push it down to disable the lock out on it, so that sitting while parked, you can take it out of park, say if you need to do stereo work, and it's in the way.
