Do a compression test on the engine. If it reads 165+ in all six cylinders, and you can limp it for a test drive and it shifts smoothly, then worst case you can part it out and make your money back.

That's more or less how I see it. If I can't fix it, I can part it out. But my mechanic said that he can definitely, without a doubt, fix it.
