Styrofoam Inserts in Rear Hatch

Do these serve some important purpose that I am unaware of? I need room to install amps subs, etc, and I decided that the rear was the way to go. Any imput would be appreciated.

If anyone has pics of where they installed amps on a MKIV, I would appreciate it.
