2 buttons next 2 gearbox ?

just got a 1994 mk 4 which has 2 buttons next 2 the gearbox . one says
manu/ect-s and the other is a red button with japaniese writing on it . what do they do ?

The "Manu" button allows you to shift the auto transmission manually. I believe it also has an effect on the oem traction control system. I'm not sure about the other button...can you post a digital picture of it?
