Default Single Turbo

I was Wondering.... anyone know the best single turbo for that 2jz? i want to push MAX! 550Hp to the crank... i know that the 2jz is the ultimate in testicular fortitude when it comes to pushing 900hp out of it, but i want to turn it into a circut type racer. also, im hoping to smoke the uter asin-ness out of my brothers 350z, is 550hp enough to smoke a vq35 TT?

The best relatively small single turbo kit for the 2jz-gte comes from Sound Performance, and it's called an SP58GT. With some suspension mods as well, you'll tear that 350 a new one on the circuit.

That turbo will do about 600rwhp max, through a 6spd, on high boost and race fuel. Note that if you do choose to run your SP58GT up that high, you'll need a full fuel system upgrade...because the oem injectors are only good for about 525rwhp though a 6spd. 600rwhp is past the point of max efficiency of the SP58GT, so it shouldn't be too hard to keep your boost levels at about 500rwhp or less (to match the injector size AND the octane of the fuel you're running).

On a related note, just noticed that you're from Cali (right?). Be sure not to run anything more than about 14.5psi using that 91 octane 'crap' at the gas pumps. If your Supra is going to be a 100% full-time circuit racer you won't have to worry about the smog nazis and your non-carb-legal single turbo kit, thank goodness.

There will be *some* additional lag with any turbo kit you get that has a significantly greater horsepower capability than stock. In other words, (you've probably already heard this saying) "there ain't no such thing as a free lunch". The oem twins in sequential mode start boosting at about 2500rpms and full boost kicks in about 3500-4000. With the relatively-small SP58GT, you'll start seeing some boost quite soon: at about 3200 rpms and then you'll probably hit full boost by about 4k. This performance isn't much worse than stock, due to the advances in turbocharging technology since 1992 (when the Mkiv was designed)...but the lack of any boost at all between 2500 and 3200 will probably be noticeable. Of course, you don't need to worry about the lag you'd get with a big single turbo kit ... some of the really big single kits don't have much of any boost at all below 5500 rpms.

Lastly, no cams are needed at the 600rwhp level...the oem cams do just fine until about 690rwhp through a 6spd. ...and as you might have already heard, the 'mighty' 2jz-gte shortblock can easily handle 850rwhp (through a 6spd) and more ... so you definitely won't need pistons, rods etc...
