Default Alignments

I know alignments don't come around that much unless parts wear, or changing setups by dropping the car lower. But I have just replaced the tie rod ends on both sides. I had it marked where the last one was but it is not good enough. The left side is wearing on the out side of the tire. Is this toe in or toe out. My main question is are the do it your self alignments any good? My friend use to drive a truck and he said the shops would no even pull the truck on a rack they would use yard stick style measures for toe only. So if this is true what is the best way to check both camber and toe because they wear tires, in a Do It Your Self style? Is the the toe tools in parts stores any good, and the camber magnetics you put on the brake rotor??? If these do work well can some one walk me through the steps to make a pretty close alignment.

Go get a 4 wheel alignment from a reputable shop. You will be happy. My tires (3 sets now) have 'even' wear perfectly for 5 years.

Re-read my post. 3 sets of tires. I burn them up with weekend mtn. driving, but they wear, and track, evenly.
