Default Looking for new wheels

Im looking to get new wheels for my 1991 for my turbo and im not sure what to get! i just got new tires to fit my stock wheels so i want to keep the same size, which is 16x7, but just get a flashier looking wheel. im not sure waht kind of offset the wheels need to be to not hit the brake... anyone have the answer? the guy i was talking to said that 40mm is too much but i dont know what the range is?
