security alarm
Son in law set off the alarm in his 1986 1/2 Supra. He got it cancelled, but the starter wouldn't crank. Its a 5 speed, and I have him a shove and it took of and ran ok. Question, does the alarm only keep the starter from getting current, or did he just happen to have a starter problem at about the same time

Common problem
I think almost every MKIII Supra owner has experienced problems with the factory alarm. I got this trick from a decent mechanic at a Toyota dealership. If the alarm won't let you start the car, insert the key into the door and turn it twice to the right. That should reset it. If it doesn't work, try the passenger door, as it gets key opened much less and will have less wear. I swear this works. I have done it several times.

alarm
Thanks for the reply. I was thinking that if the alarm was keeping the starter from getting current, It would also kill the ignition. Can't find much about what all the alarm does in the repair manual. However since we rolled the car and got it started, it must not cut off the ignition, or he just has a starter problem at the same time.

Try the key trick first. I set off the alarm on my car after accidentally locking the keys in. I don't remember if it turned off when I tried to start the car, but I do know it would not start until I unlocked the driver's side door. After that, it was fine.

Supra alarm
Thanks we'll try that again, and from both doors. If no change, we'll pull the starter and check it our, or if we can get to it with some jumper cables, we'll see if its getting voltage or not

Also, check the post for 'Alarm System' in 'Supra FAQ'. Here's a quick link: http://www.toyota-supra.info/forums/...rm-system.html . If you read through it, and look at the wiring diagrams, you'll see that the security system does only interrupt the starter circuit by ungrounding the relay. That's all it does. It does not interrupt the ignition circuits at all. I hope the key trick worked.
