Need input again....

Here it is. I bought a JDM engine swap 7-mgte. The head gasket was crap. Number 1 full of water!! I pulled the head off the original engine a long time ago. Pulled the head off the new engine it ran before I did this. I had my original head hot tanked and re surfaced. Put it all together and all that good stuff. My ? when I pulled the valve caps they got mixed up on the way home so I regapped the lash adjustment 0.25mm Exaust and 0.20mm Intake. Would this adjustment be to much? Or should it run? Or is this a timing issue???

I think from memory those are ok.

Clearances generally will not stop your enigne running. What symptoms is it giving on startup?

fienloco 08-22-2008 03:42 AM

Seems to be ok.

It starts as it did a long time ago when I first got her. Now my issue is timing. My cam and crank marks are all in line. Now today when I went to dial her in to ten degrees before TDC all I can get out of her is fifteen degrees before TDC.... I am at the end of the adjustment slot, I turn her back a tooth to much retarded I turn up a gear too much advance no room to adjust.... I am stumped seems to run ok stumbles right when I step on the accelerator them fires off. Gettn a bit hot due to a bad thermostat and the clutch fan is crap. Not enough to think its timing really. Got a Fluidyne puller fan that I aint too sure on how it installs since it didnt come with directions also cant figure out where the A/C wire runs to. Im beat! A week of a head job and still need more info than a Haynes manual has to offer as they are not direct with the 87' shes an odd ball out of the class. They describe more on the 92' and earlier to 88' then 86' and back and so on. What do you think of the fifteen before TDC??

Timing is very easy.

Set the engine to TDC. Pull the cps (dizzy) and line up the slot with the dot!
Start inserting it so that if you imagine the bolt in already it would be pretty much center of the cps which would also be center on the head.

Slot it in. Tighten it up. Start it, leave it to warm up.
Put a wire between TE1 & E1 in the diagnostic box and set timing to 10deg.

Let me know how you get on :)

I donet understand

Ok I had the T1 & E1 diagnostics cross connected. I am lost on the rest guess Im not understandind the abbreviations. Sorry. Im still a rookie!!

Thanx

You have been much help and you obviously know your stuff. Much love!! I will get back and let you know what I have discovered tomorrow when I get her all dialed in. Or if I encounter anymore problems. By the way would you know where the the A/C wire goes and how I should go about hot wiring my Fluidyne fan in.

Another ?

Heres one for you I now understand what you mean from the TSRM IGN pages. But when I had the distributor matchmarks alligned, cam and crank 0 degrees TDC. How I tried it the first time. It ran it smoked when I say smoke I MEAN it looked like I was burning the barn down. There was sooo much smoke I could not even look through my garage at all. WTF??!!! I said and turned the distributor 180 out rotor pointing toward the bottom of the distributor. That is where it lay now 15 degrees before TDC. Can you explain that for me? The engine is from overseas but I dont believe it would run on the oposite end of the distributor.
