The other day i went to start my car and the battery was dead. So i jumped it and took it for a spin. It was idling really funny and it was making a skeaking noise. So when i took it for a spin, when i shifted gears the car felt like it was stumbling or wantig to stall. At a stopsign the car just cut out on me and stalled. I started it back up again and i found out that if i let off the gas the car would stall even if i was moving at 25 mph. So i limped the car home and the problem still persists. Does anyone have an idea of why the car would be doing this.

Alternator? Voltage Regulator? Bad battery connection? Try these first, as they are quite common problems, especially in older cars.

I have checked the alternator output and it checks out ok and the battery connections dont have any visible problems. Im going to check the vaccum hoses and see if there is any leaks.

that happened to me once with another car...try cleaning up the motor itself like the head and the cylinders...that did the trick for me...theres a lot of buildup in the motor and it causes some interference so it has to be cleared away once in a while

It was making squeeling noise? That's your alternator belt slipping, or the bearings in the alternator going out, either one will kill a battery, and the car. Check the belt first, and then if it's not that, take the alternator off and have it tested...

oh damn i dint read that there was a squealing noise...yea its the alternator....like poodles said its either the bearings or the belt...i think it sounds like hte belt

if the check engine light is coming on when this happens (just before it stalls) you can do a diagnostic.. this may have a solution :)

how to... is in the faqs

Thanks guys for the info im going to check on the alternator.

Everytime my car makes that skeaking niose the needle on the tach moves when the car is idling. Does this further prove that it is the alternator. Someone on another forum said that it could be the coil packs. What do you think about that?

Poodles 08-18-2005 10:39 PM

which way does it move? Yeah, it could move if it's binding and bogging the engine down, or it's slipping so bad it's not supplying enough power to keep it running right. I really doubt it's the coil packs since it's squeeling, and the alternator is a far cheaper thing to replace first...
