1st gear jumping out, 4th gear crunching, how do I fix it without changing gearbox
I have a 93 supra non turbo with a 5 speed manual. The problem is in 1st gear I have to hold it in because it always jumps out if I don't and also when I am driving and put it into 4th gear it crunches and sometimes jumps out too!!
How do I fix this without changing the gearbox |
Posted in the wrong section. I'll move this to the general discussion group as the W58 was used in more than just the one model.
I don't think you are going to be able to fix this without rebuilding or replacing the gearbox. |
much easier to replace! probably cheaper to. if you have pieces of gears or rubbish floating around in there it could have damaged more than you think ! W58's come in two differant shifter positions, it's an easy swap if you can't get the right one ,just use the bit's off the old one.

i got a really freash box for 675 bucks, i did look around but there not as cheap as a few years ago. i had to move the shifter back, but it was no real trouble. i just noticed you in oz, what state ? i'm in victoria, maybe i can help? all you need is 14mm open end or ring spanner (if memory serves me correctly ),rtv sealant and a little shifter or 10,12 mm spanner. sockets are best for the job if you have them? ring around and get a quote on price for box ! |
shifter lengths
go to ( celicasupra.com ) and do a search , type in ( W58 shift lever housing ) there are some pictures of the different lengths , 4 in total ! I didn't know there was that many .:dunno::crazy2:
good luck. |

I think you misunderstood me , the box i got is in my car as a friend did me the courtesy of blowing the one i had in it ,it was 20 years old thou. That's why i looked around for one . Just ring a few transmission places and ask for a box . they generally have fairly new one's they import ,not old crappy ones . check out the picture i mentioned in earlier post ,it shows the different shifter positions.
