if you know somebody that can get you a "passed" sticker...you should be ok, dont go to state inspection stations...i know a friend that does private smog tests...well he owns his own shop and he knows i have a 1jz..so he just made sure i wasnt killing anyone...my car actually passes nj smog tests, but i know inspection wont pass me since its not the factory motor..so my boy passed my car...rightfully

Here in Calif. you can only replace the motor with one that was offered for that model. You can go newer year (89 car, 91 motor). 7mge N/A to 7mgte turbo is OK.
Going to a different type motor might get by the smog test guy, if it runs really good, everything looks like factory under the hood, (remove any stickers that give engine ID, like 7mge, etc.) no check light on or codes, timing set to original spec (10* ?), all hoses properly connected, new gas cap, egr in place and working evap system in place and working, and it passes the tailpipe test. (PS...I manage a smog shop) |

haha i put a sticker on my 1jz that said 7mgte...it passed inspection the first time...but then it melted off on my way home....in nj..its the same type of thing u can put in a motor designated for that car...either that year or newer..cant be older, and u cant have motors that were never in that car.. or never meant for it...like a 1jz in an mk3 or an sr20 in a 240...stuff like that, but i can swap a gsr motor into a civic, i dunno the laws here are messed up

Since the fine is $10,000, and a license probation, it's pretty hard to find someone you don't already know to do an illegal for you.
I see many, many engines come thru the shop that have no sticker to tell us what it is. I doubt the technician would know the difference, as long as everything looked good, and in its proper place. Make sure its running great, new gas cap, etc. You can always have a 'pre-test' done first. Pre-tests are not official, and are not held against you if it does not pass. If the tech says, "hey, looks like you'll pass", then go ahead and run the real test, cause he's been fooled with engine swap. And...Maybe you can make a sticker by getting a picture of one off the internet, then printing it on a piece of aluminum, then glue it on the timing cover. i printed it on the shiny sticker background to make it look a little metallic and got away with it...but then again this is before i knew thsi guy that did smog tests....now when i had the 1jz i used the guy now because i know him and he lets me pass as long as its not too crazy...when i used to have the 7m it was tougher...i was still able to pass since it was a little easier
