Need New CAT
I will probably need a new catalytic converter soon and saw a great disparity in prices, ranging from over $300 to about $85. Meineke wants 170 to install a "Maremont". Anyone ever hear of this brand? Are they any good? I would like to get a performance cat but I need to pass emissions test soon. Any one out there have ideas?

Here at my shop it would cost you $109.95 for the Magnaflow cat, $40 labor to weld it in place, plus tax = $159.07.
We use Magnaflow because they are very good, and they last for years. There is a shop here that installs some cheap cats for $90, OTD., but they are what's called a 'one pass cat', because it won't last more than a year. You should shop around, or maybe you can get one online, then have a muffler shop weld it in. |

RE: New Cat
Okay,
So I shop around for a new cat, Magnaflow being one of the good ones. Anyone else know of some other names? How about "Bosal", I see a lot of them around. Then I have it installed. Does it need to be welded? Or can I do this my self with sockets and wrenches? It looks like I could do it but I'm not sure. Also, in the future, (when my wallet gets fatter) I would like to upgrade to a header with larger down pipe, so what should I take into consideration with an eye toward that? Also, still have not gotten hood open but am going to body shop this weekend. I hope they don't have to cut anything as I recently payed $229 for the "header panel" (nose cone). Special question to mrnickleye: after replacing the 02 sensor, I have noticed a difference (for the better) in engine opeation and especially fuel consumption, should I attempt another pass at the emissions test without the new cat and just see what kind of numbers pop out? Thanks to everyone for all their help, James in NJ |
