My very first Sports car------87 supra turbo
all day today i searched for a rwd manual car under 5 g's. i finally found one a 87 supra turbo, 97k miles, clean car fax (only 2 other owners), a little bit of body dmg and the alignment is a little bit off (it turns to the right a tad bit). the used car salesmen homies promised to fix the alignment and body dmg n paint job. they offerd the car for 2 grand.
to tell the truth im very un experienced in the car scene, this will be my second car if i purchase it. my first car was a jeep and i learned stick on a truck, i want to buy a sporty car that would be easy to work on that i could learn the basics of mechanics and drifting of course..... i have cousins that ace autoshop to help me get into this plus tons of other friends that are car buffs. i talked to people about this deal but i wanted to ask people in these forums i found if they think its a good deal?? the cars rear break light cover is broken and i was wondering if it would be hard to replace that??? would it be hard for me to learn the ropes on a supra? am i getting in something over my head? i dont want to regret this later is what im trying to say............. so preach what u think n that would be chill as can be! |

Hey, just be careful and get it checked out by a third party mechanic, first. I bought my 87 supra for 2,200 and it runs well, but the power steering hoses needed to be replaced (not easy to do by yourself) and the a/c was bad (ended up $650 because the system was so old, they had to replace it in order to fix anything). Just be careful about it

well you need to remember that these cars are almost 20yrs old so they wont be flawless. they will have their share of problems, and then some more. but most the time the problems occur becuase the car is not being maintained

knowing what i know now compared to what i knew when i got my first supra , here is one piece of advice .
the head gasket design on the car is not good . be prepared to replace the head gasket it's not an IF thing it's a WHEN thing . your head gasket is going to go for sure

Re: first Supra
I bought my first Supra last spring, 89 N/A and I'll tell you, I love it. The engine runs great and I maintain it on a regular schedule. But like they say, these cars are close to 20 yrs old, so there are other little problems that can pop up and cause u lots of headaches. For instance, my latch mechanism broke and I could not for the life of me open my hood. Wound up payin close to a C Note including parts. What bothers me is that alignment. I would have to be wondering if the car was in a major collision. And these "homeboys" sound a little too anxious to dump the car off. Definitely get another opinion, if someone you trust says "go for it", then jump on it, cuz that's a decent price for that car.

a test drive is also your best bet, if you can get a test drive you would be able to find most of the problems by that, steering, motor, idle, electronics etc., though sometimes teh owner will start the car for you, i suggest starting the car yourself that way you can judge and see if hte ignition and startup is ok, nothing beats a test drive

since i posted this thread, i have bought this car, it found out the rocker panel was bent, which i knew. the passenger side tail light was broke, the driver side front blinker light was broken but today i got back from the junk yard and just by coinsidence they just got a new 87 supra in with a perfect body, i bought all three of those things for 325. to get all the body fixed up and the rocker pabel put on its gonna cost me 2 grand mebe a little less hopefully from this place that my car dealer said would give me 20% off. im going to check them out as soon as my rocker panel is ready in 10 days.
overall i feel that im still getting a good deal for how much im spending on all this. seems like after everything its gonna cost about 4,500 total including the car maybe give or take a lil to make the car stock. the car runs extremly great and the interior seems too look new its been taken care of so good. if u have any questions about it let me know. |
