Wink Continuing Emmissions Saga in NJ

Just got re-inspected after changing O2 sensor and failed again but numbers did improve. Last time I failed for HC and CO but passed for NOx. This time I passed both CO and NOx but still failed HC with reading going down from 279 to 207. Bought Magnaflow Cat, 2 1/2 inch dia., 13 inches long. Have to wait till pay day to install (What with Christmas for the kiddies and all) but I think I should have a real shot at it this time. I'm tellin ya, they don't mess around here in Jersey. I told the attendant that I'd bet a C Note (wink, wink) that I pass this time but nuthin doin. What happened to the good old days when everyone in New Jersey took bribes. So what do you think folks, should the new cat cut down my Hydrocarbons enough that I can pass? I hope so, as money can't buy u luv in the garden state.

Sincerely,

James

Yea, you'll pass with the cat, now.
They don't take the $$ under the table from strangers because the state and epa do stings. Here in Calif. its $10k fine for the shop and probation, and alot of random visits by the state inspector. And it was a Gold Shield shop, thats taken away too. It happened to us. The (now X) stupid technician passed a 'sting' car. He didn't even take any $$ under the table either. The guy gave him a hard luck story.

Smile Re: Emmissions

Thanks Mr.Nickleye,

I bought the Magnaflow with the 2 1/2 inch dia. pipes because this summer I would like to install header with 2 1/2 inch cat back exhaust. If I do this, do I have to make corresponding changes to the intake system? The guy at the shop showed me this shiny "open air" intake, but if I hook it up to the same throttle body, what good does it do? Also, what about the computer, which I know nothing about. The last car I worked on for speed was a 69 Camaro, and I just threw on a Holly highrise manifold, 4 barrel carb, and a set of black jack headers. Man, that small block 350 chevy roared. But hey, those were the good ol' days, right! Maybe I should just stay stock, I don't know, but I would like to have a project for the summer.

Sincerely and with lots of gratitude to all,

James in NJ
