Cool OK You guys talked me into doin it myself

I would like to replace my valve cover gaskets. There was some oil on 2 of my plugs. Are there two gaskets, or is it one big sheet? Will I have to scrape off old gaskets? Will crap fall in my engine? I have NA so throttle body should not be that hard. Mr.Nic says 3/8". I thought everything was metric? Where should I start when taking off throttle body? Will I have to take off intake manifold to get left side valve cover off? If I can pull this off, then I can do my own tune-ups and not have to worry about was this or that done. Any help would be appreciated. Oh, and sorry Mr.Nickleye, the drive from NJ to California is a bit much for me to locate an honest mechanic, which I'm sure you are.

Thanks folks,

James in NJ

Yep...bit of a drive, but well worth it in a good running supra. You could "see" America.

3/8" drive metric sockets is what I meant. You will probably need a universal swival adaptor too. You only need to take off the "Y" part of the intake. You can leave the throttle body on "it".

get a valve cover gasket set from the parts house. it should have all the needed gaskets.

If the #3 VC gasket (center one to seal spark plugs boots) is crappy looking, you'll have to order it from the toy dealer ($35).

Gotta go now, I'll check back later tonight.

Cool

scruff you better make sure you don't have any more cooling system problems before you worry about some oil around the cam covers . just hate to see you do twice the work on those covers

Thumbs up RE: more coolant problems

Yeah, I was thinkin along those lines too. But I did get it pressure checked and they found no more leaks. I have driven this car kind of hard, and it has 127,000 on it, in a former thread someone felt the HG might have been replaced already. I think I'll wait for the weather to get a little nicer (maybe 3 months). Question for Mr.Nickleye, it sounds like you are tellin me there are 3 gaskets, 2 valve cover and center, is this correct? If it is, my center one is shot. And thanks, I see what you mean about the "Y", and last night I took lots and lots of pictures. I would suggest that to anyone, as I now have a reference if something falls off. You guys are very helpful. Thanks for everything.

Sincerely,

James (Scruff) in NJ

You don't absolutely have to have the #3 center gasket, as it is there to keep debri out of the spark plug holes. If you spray clean your motor, Water will get in, even with a new gasket. I put a new one on when I did my BHG because I want things right, and I know the gasket will last another 10 years.
