Default Idle problem 1988 Supra non turbo

I am thinking about buying a red 1988 Supra 5sp targa today however the dealer ays he has problems with the idle on it - cannot drive - won't hold an idle

Any ideas?

Things I should look for (been raining here for a month so I will be able to check to see if the top is leaking) :-)

Could it be idle air control valve?

It has 189,000 km on it.

Well...I will tell you the same I tell all my 'car-buying' customers and friends.....take it to a trusted mechanic that is experienced, and have him check the whole car over. Have them do a diagnosis to see whats wrong with the idle.
The car lot selling it should be willing to pay to have it diagnosed, but most are just greedy, and want your $$$.

You see, I was a new & used car salesman for 3 years, so I know their ways.

Either they already know what's wrong with the car, but don't want to spend the $$$ to fix it (cause the cars not worth putting any 'serious' $$$ into), and they don't want to loose $$$ on it. Or what???

I would be VERY careful with that car purchase.

Smile Thanks..

I went to another dealer and bought that one instead.. perfect paint, no leaks, smooth sounding engine. I gave up having a targa and a standard tranny however I got one with a power sunroof and an auto.. vey nice actually.

I will probably pick it up in a few days. (Selling my jeep Grand Cherokee for it.)
