Troyota is most correct. Take it from us old guys. Rice burner is any Japanese vehicle. This includes motorcycles and MAYBE originated with 60's/70's Harley guys referring to Honda's and such. They used to say "I'd rather push my Harley than ride a rice burner".
Funny thing is I would ride my Honda past many a broke down Harley back then. Just like my '88 Supra of which I'm the original owner has been in the shop once (blown head gasket) in the 23 years I've owned it. Any american car I've owned is usually in the shop 23 times in the first year of ownership. No wonder Toyota is taking over the car market and GM is going down.

Remember...rice burner is ANY Japanese vehicle and this term should be considered a compliment to anybody with a brain.

If you want to create some less flatering slang for poorly modified rice burners you should target the guilty owners who ruin their cars. "Fried rice-head", "Sticky rice-brain", ...whatever...it's not the car's fault.

As defined by the web: The term rice burner or rice car can mean different things, based on the context of its use: * Most of the time it refers to automobiles (usually low-cost factory standard) that have the appearance of a customized / high performance car, but possibly with little or no functional modifications, such as improved engine, suspension or brakes.

All show and no go = rice

I would not call the supra a low-cost econo box...Not rice.

Spudboy is correct. The term rice burner goes way back and I first heard it used to refer to Jap bikes. Twenty five years ago when I was in the Marines I used to read "Easyrider" magazine just to pass some time on ship and it was in use a lot back then. The Harley guys called any bike from Japan rice burners. It's a very old term, but I guess the kids into the import scene today are just starting to hear it.

Bottom Line...WHO CARES...but
1) The term DID originate over 25 years ago and refered to ALL vehicles built in Japan. (bikes and cars)
2) It was, at that time, more or less an insult in the minds of ignorant 'Buy American" types and people still pissed off about Pearl Harbor.
3) Many of these same people worked at or went on to work at GM and Ford plants with the same ignorant/trade union mentality only to blindly let the 'rice burners' blow past American cars and bikes in quality, performance, and ultimately market share.
4) It appears now that since 'rice burner' can't be considered an insult by the general public (maybe except for NASCAR fans) the micro 'fast and furious' generation of Honda tuners has twisted this old term to allow themselves to insult one-another.
5) I condsider my Supra, Subaru Legacy 2.5 GT, and my Honda 650 dual sport bike to be rice burners and proud of it. (I just wish they would actually run on rice instead of $3.70/gal gas)
6) I am an American and proud of that too! (except when other 'ugly Americans' act like ignorant fools.)

$3.70 per gallon!!! i have not heard much about so. cal's gas but it must be high. here in ohio it is like $2.69 and going down!

u guys r so freaking lucky .. in chicago, gas prices are like 3.89 and thats not where its gonna stay by the middle of summer gas prices are gonna be like 4.25
