What year is it? I have an 86, it does the same thing. I havent been able to figure it out either. With a volt meter it reads 12 volts at the terminals, but it wont light the bulbs.

Might have an issue between the switch and the light itself.

me too!
I have the same problem except it only works when the car is off. I noticed it when me and my girlfriend were sitting in it having a "smoke" and it didn't turn on. Then I turned the car off and it worked just fine. I just use my visor-mirror light

According to the volt meter, all the switches work properly. It reads 12v at both when the buttons are pressed, and when the door is open. I think it is immediatley burning out the lights. Or the polarity is backwards, But i dont think it would matter with those kind of bulbs.

Polarity is not an issue. Mine had the same troubles. Its a supra thing.
The trouble is in the light assy., not the door switches. I found the ground circuit does not make a good contact, for one thing. I also had to screw with it all for 3 hours. I had to re-solder the wires to the terminals 3-4 times to make a goog connection. It was a real nightmare project, but they've been working now for 3 years.

well some bulbs for cars are meant to be 6v but they have resistors and diodes that only make them work with a certain polarity, and so they can run on 12 volts. Same with LEDs, becuase they are diodes. But i need my dome light to work, because i deliver pizza. lol. Its very helpful
