Hey I'm new here, this forum looks like it has a lot of knowledge behind it. I just picked up a 88 supra about 2 weeks ago, and so far love it. I'm new to toyota, and also new to forced iduction. I've heard about a head gasket problem with the MKIII's, and was wondering how much it would be to fix a problem like that if it occurs. My car has 57,000 on it and in great shape, I hope it doesnt plan on going soon
![]() Also my car has a hard time starting in the mornings from a cold start. The previous owner suggested I change my fuel filter, could that be the problem? I have the filter I just need to put it in. Any other problems u can think of besides a fuel filter? Thanks |

the blown headgasket occurance is due to the factory under torquing the headbolts. retorque them to 75-80 lb/sq in. 18yr old car with only 57k on the speedo is an impressive find. im sure the other members can answer your other questions

57K on a 88 supra, man you lucked out. Take care of it and it should last a good long time. I have an 89 with 128K and I swear I can't find rust on the thing. I don't know what Toyota did, but they did an excellent job. I have experienced a few problems you would expect on an older vehicle, like a coolant leak I had to repair, and valve cover gaskets that needed replacing, but overall, it still runs great and gives me loads of pleasure.

Yea so far I really do enjoy the car. I am new to forced induction, I know somewhat about cars but I'm not a motor head.
There are a few things I dont understand, and I hope someone could help me out. I understand my car is running at a stock boost of 6.7 psi. If I put on exhaust, downpipe and intake will the boost go up X amount of pounds? Or will I need a boost controller to increase how many pounds I want it to put out? I hear people say "I hope to put out 15 pounds by next summer" yaddi yaddi yadda, but I dont understand how they determine what is safe. Any information on this would be great. Also, when is it time to upgrade turbo? What should be done before upgrading? Basically I dont wanna slap anything on and have it shit the bed because it isnt done right. One last thing before I make myself look like any more of an idiot ![]() ![]() Any help at all would be appreciated. Also any input on what kinds of upgrades I should get please post. Thanks Jim |
