going to the track

so im heading to the track on friday to see what my supra runs. ive never done this before so i was wondering if i could get some tips. like optimum launch rpm, shift rpm, anything to help me get my lowest time? im driving a 86.5 n/a, pretty much stock, aside from a cold sir intake. any advice or suggestions would be awesome.

Supra2NR 06-18-2006 05:03 PM

my 88 n/a has pretty much the same mods as you do, i launch the car a 4000 rpms since this is the most i got cuz the tires jus spins out if i go any higher it would really do me any better, and i shift in between 4000-5000 rpms, cuz thats when i feel the most out of my engine, but giv your car a few runs, and feel for it yourself

if you come up with better results share em,

never timed my car tho, so any 1/4 mile times would be helpful

5600 is the so called peak for power. But what 2nr said, whenever you start to feel the car lose a little power, shift.

I'm not much for racing, I'm the kinda guy who likes to show off, but when I do race, it's usually to redline, but...I race a civic so there's a big difference. They can handle the revs...don't know a whole lot about Supras.

damdog05 06-19-2006 04:19 AM

i dont think supras like it very much...at all. i used to have an rx7 and i could redline it all day long.

I've street raced a buddy's RX-7 and it would red-line easy. But If you say a supra can't do it...who am I to argue...I dun really know a whole lot about them. Just know that usually they can beat my Civic, cause it's N/A without supercharger or Turbo on it...just Borla Exaust...

damdog05 06-19-2006 05:21 AM

oh i dont know everything about them, just a little bit. anyway...any more tips anyone? this is a good start and i will be sure to update with my times and such when i get back. by the way...its at atlanta dragway in commerce, ga. $20 entrance fee for street legal cars. a good opportunity if anyone wants to join me

Supra2NR 06-19-2006 03:24 PM

its not that my car cant redline, i did it a couple of times, and a civic? trust me those cars have a hard time keeping up with me when i shift at 5000 rpms , i dunt redline my car cuz my headgasket hasnt been replaced with a metal one yet, im building up my funds to find a 1jzgte or jus a 7mgte, so thats why im trying to drive my car as soft as i can

but race me with a civic , crx, prelude, or any car evenly matched with the same mods that i got, and i can show them what an inline engine can do

so i was wondering about the tires. should i let some air out so there is more rubber in contact with the road, or would that just cause more drag? maybe keep em filled up front and let some out of the back?

yeah if your running street tires you can drop the rears down to about 25 lbs. Any more than that is really counter-productive on street tires. Keep the fronts at full pressure.

you could go out and find yourself a set of mickeyT's cheater slicks. I think you can run those down to about 15lbs or air. They are essentially racing "slicks" with tread on em and DOT approved.

When bracket racing the most important things to do are cut good lights and stay consistant. Dont race the guy next to you...run your own race.

tires

well as far a raceing with street tires i would say just under normal psi (thats is how they are ment to be run) and if you do burnouts to heat the tires befor you run dont over heat them alot of people do and well it pretty much just eats the tread off the tire and dosnt improve traction any i find it better to oly heat street tires a little.

damdog05 06-20-2006 04:01 AM

alright. thanks. what exactly is normal driving psi?

superpage1987 06-20-2006 11:00 PM

psi

Well it will change from tire to tire sum run around 35 others 44psi. Your psi ratind is maked on the side wall. I would recommed tring to stay withing 7 or 8 pounbds of that, but try a few run at the recommended psi the try going up or down see if you can find where they run better for you. Just remeber every one drive a little different so try a few thing see what works best for you. O ya i run mind all the way to 5600 but it is an auto so it shift slow anyway.

damdog05 06-20-2006 11:46 PM

cool. thanks

superpage1987 06-21-2006 12:22 AM

one more thing

o ya one more reminder if you let air out of the tires at the track you will have to put it back in befor driving on the street or you will distroy the side walls.
