Question Help!

So my car has been running a little hot lately...I've got an 87 Supra that's in pretty good shape, but has started having difficulties. It started overheating and i could smell radiator fluid, so i took it to my mechanic. He said there wasn't enough give in the fan clutch and replaced it. It worked great for a while, but then I was driving yesterday and when I would stop at a traffic light for more than a minute, the temperature guage would go up about 4 or five clicks. On the way home, it was running fine. Also, my crankshaft was worn where it meets the harmonic balancer, so my mechanic welded it and smoothed it over. He said it should last about 6 months to a year, until I get my engine rebuilt. Any advice? I'm looking for an engine that I can rebuild while i continue to use my own car, then just switch it out. Anyone have any advice?
