Fighting the Dreaded Leaky Hatch
 

I am waging a war on my leaky hatch...I believe I have two contributors...first is the well known leaky taillight which provides a resevoir for the swimming pool. The second is the my hatch gasket/weatherstrip which looks like it was ravaged by wild yaks. The tail lights while a pain in the ass are a pretty easy fix (take a part, caulk, put back together) the weatherstrip on the other hand is more difficult. Does anyone know where I can pick up a decent replacement?

My back hatch is in pretty good shape, unless there is a real downpore it keeps out the water. My moonroof definitely could use some fixing. A regular rain won't get in, but in really hard rains it leaks, mostly after it stops and I move the car. I was thinking of buying weatherstripping from a home depot or some other hardware store and see if I might be able to snug it up myself. Whadaya think?

I am all for fabricating something yourself, that is if you know what you are doing. If something that you can find, and will work, is cheaper.....then do it, and don't look back!

Lots of times, you can make something that will work, and not look horrible, for WAY less than buying the actual part. As for buying the weather stripping for your car, I believe the cheapest price I have found for the rear seals was somewhere around the $480 USD mark.

That is a simple piece, that costs ALOT to buy....too bad they get destroyed easily.

Has anyone had any luck with a generic product? Maybe I'll just get a car cover....

My rear hatch does not leak, it's the moon roof. I don't see to many Supra's with moon roofs, but this was definitely an option, as I can tell it was part of the original car. Anyway, the weather stripping around the hatch looks like nothing more than you would put on a door, so I was thinking I could get away with something from a hardware store. Thank God my rear hatch has stayed in pretty good shape. Whoever owned this car before me took excellent care of he interior, and I'm trying to follow in his path.

Well I can tell you its not the Moonroof/Sunroof 'cause I don't have one. Anyways I found a place that sells OEM supra parts at a good price on-line. Its a little funky because they list it as the Celica Supra, but they give you nice little exploded diagrams so you can see your part. They have the hatch weatherstrip for about $70 USD.

Ok. The hatch weatherstripping from the dealership is $77. The taillight gaskets are around $20 each. Those are the only 2 problem areas that water could come in thru. Unless there is a bigger problem. I.E. rust.
