86.5 7MGE supra smog test fails
I've replace the EGR valve, oxygen sensor, bimetallic vaccuum switch, catalytic converter. I am still getting over 3 on the "CO". I was told maybe
the mass air flow sensor is bad. also, could a temp sensor be causing this? Any ideas out there? |

if temp sensor is reading low engine temps (like sender is malfunction) then computer will increase fuel.
find "the" diagnostic tech in your area and have him check it out. but beware, there are a lot of fools that call them selves technicians.

Yea, but its about a 3-4 hr drive.
I suggest going to several repair shops (not smog shops yet) and ask who they think is the 'best' smog diagnostics guy around. Then, if a few say "go see so-n-so over at blah blah shop, then he's the guy. Ask who they would send a real problem car to, when they could not figure it out.

!!!!!!!!!!!! smog check finally passed !!!!!!!!!!
I should have known better than to take a car to get smogged when I couldnt get it to idle at 600rpm. It wouldnt idle at 600 so I adjusted the dashpot screw and forced it to idle smoothly at 1100. The CO level was at 5% - air/fuel mixture too rich - gross polluter. Everything else was passed. I was describing my smog check issue at a pizza place and a fellow overheard the conversation. He told me that he had a licensed smog shop and for $100 he can get me a certificate without me fixing anything on my Supra. Boy, was I ever tempted. Thanked him for the offer but I didnt want to be part of an illegal thing. After the failed smog check, I prayed some more, I finally found the problem by tapping on the TPS with my finger while the car was running, the rpm would fluctuate everytine I tapped on it. I replaced the TPS and the idle went from 1100 down to 600. So I took it to get smogged and it failed again because I didnt know that the TPS affected the timing which was at zero degrees and needed to be at 10. The station was kind enough to let me take the car home without charging me (previuosly failed 4 other times from same station). I took it back and passed with flying colors. Lesson learned: dont take a car to be smogged when the idle is not at right rpm.
I replaced the spark plugs later and found the plugs dripping with oil. Anyone out there know why there is oil in that part of the engine? |
