1984 Toyota Supra Repair
Hi all! I just purchased a 1984 Supra in good condition from the original owner with 88,000 miles on it. It's an LE model, automatic with full power options, a very nice car. I paid $500.00 as the owner had the car off the road for a year as he did'nt use it anymore, he had 2 porsches and a mercedes as well. He said the car was his baby and it was well cared for. The interior of the car is in pristine condition with a chocolate and burgundy color. The exterior is white with black race stripes, there are no major dents but the usual Supra rust spots near the louver connectors on the hatch and a few other spots. The car runs well, but I intend to start engine maintainence immediate. I topped off the gas tank with 93 octane shell gas and added tectron fuel injector cleaner to the first tank. The car showed an immediate improvement in pick up and acceration. Judging by the condition of the spark plug wires and dist. cap, I suspect they were done shortly before he took it off the road and are in good condition. The alternator belt squeels a bit when the car is first run, but quite's down once the car is warmed up. I put some fan belt dressing on the belts, but not sure if it made that much difference. As the car was sitting, I plan to change the oil and filter, and check or replace the spark plugs this weekend. The car had a few other items I need to address and would like some input on what the problem may be, please see item list below and reply if you like with suggestions. I want to address some of these issues myself vs. taking the car to the local Toyota Dealer, I have had some quality issues with them when they worked on my restored 1986 Toyota MR2 5 speed.
Supra Issues: 1. Car makes a scraping sound from passenger front side when the car hits a dip in the road ( front strut or possible exhaust pipe hitting frame problem?) 2. Car runs well but miss's or Hic cupps on idle ( looks like ignition control box was replaced, bad plug or other ignition component?) 3. Car rear end or trans has a slight jolt when decelerating or trans downshift ( U joint or possible rear end issue?) I plan to do the following other maintainence, do you suggest anything else? 1. Transmission fluid service / filter 2. Coolant Flush 3. Full tune up 4. belts / hoses 5. brake pads 6. tires / alignment if needed 7. Rear shocks / front strut check Thank you for listening to my ramblings, please feel free to reply Jake73 |
