Pin stripe removal suggestions
Hey gang,
Does anyone have any tricks or tips to removing a stock pin stripe? I've picked at it a bit and it looks like it might only be tape rather than paint. I planing on just using a heat gun otherwise. Thanks |

If its the plastic tape, a heat gun will do it. You should expect the original paint color to be under it, and therefore will look darker than the slightly faded paint next to it.

if its paint, try stopping by any autobody shop and see what they can do. I agree the pinstripe on the MKIII's is so out of style and have no idea what Toyota was thinking when they put it on...I mean come on, these were "sportscars" when they came out, and sportscars should not have anything like that...in my opinion. My 86.5 had it but thankfully my 87 is without.

Hi Mr.Nickleye
I have pinstriping and would like to do away with it, but taking a heat gun to my car sounds rather hazardous to the paint around the pinstripe. How far from the car would you suggest to hold the gun? Can you get it started unpeeling just using your fingernail? I'd hate having to take a razor blade to it. If this is the case, I think I'll keep the pinstripe.

The heat gun should be kept about 6" from the car. Just warm up the stripe enough to get it started with your finger nail. The gun softens it up.
I've seen our body/paint guy remove it in long strips.
