Default Timing issue?

im wondering if its possible to adjust the timing myself, im equipped with a select amount of tools, and a hanes book..
reason i ask is it started today, and i could hear the misses, it gives me chills when i hear such things.. lol
but my thottle position sensor is bad, not yet replaced.. will that throw it out of time?, the reason i know its bad, 51 was the only code i got after ruinning my diagnostics..
