Do a diagnostic

get the code number or numbers and see what they tell you. The codes are somewhere on this forum, do a search. It could be the Idle Position Sensor, the Coolant Temperature Sensor, the Idle Speed Control but you won't know till you check the ECU codes. My similar problem was a combo of Coolant temp sensor and Idle Position. Good luck, hope this sets u in the right direction.

NO choke on MKIII. EFI car. Chokes are for carburetors.

You are correct

Of course there is no choke with EFI, but don't all those sensors acting in concert give you something that acts like a choke? Many of us older guys still think in those terms and just carry the language around like luggage.
