Need Help

Hey everyone,

I have a 1988 Supra non turbo manual shift. I just replaced the head gasket. The car ran fine. I drove it about 70 miles then it started to sputter. The temp gauge maxed out and the car began to jerk and had no power. Then it stopped jerking and ran normal. A few miles later it did it again. It almost sounded like it was running on 5 cylinders instead of 6. I smelled a hint of spent gas out of the exhaust. Does anyone know what is wrong with my car?

Thanks
maclj

Did you reuse or replace the head bolts? If you replaced, did you use ARP? What was the final torque spec on the head bolts? How many passes did you do when you installed the head bolts?

I would get in there ASAP and retorque the head bolts. Sounds like a shoddy install and they loosened up. But that is pure speculation at this point. Report back.

Help

I replaced with ARP and torqued the head 72 and went around 3 times. I think it jumped timing but not sure. Now it will not start. No water leaks at all.

Thanks for your reply

Pull the thermostat housing and upper timing cover and make sure the cam marks line up when the crank pulley is lined up with the 0 degree mark. It will only line up once every 2 times you spin the crank.

Did you replace or reuse the timing belt? Did you replace or reuse the tensioner? What did you torque the tensioner bolt to? Did you properly tension the timing belt?

re: Help

I will try this and let you know how it turned out. I torqued the tensioner around 36lbs. Same belt though. I replace this belt and tensioner 15,000 miles ago.

Fixed

Well the problem with the car was it jumped timing. Fixed that. The igniter went out so I replaced that. The car is runnig smooth and everything is good again. :bigthumb: :gotnos:

Thanks 4 the help IHateHacks.
