MSD Systems
MSD and other companies make multi-spark ignition systems that work for most gasoline powered vehicles.
They function by causing the coil(s) to fire the spark plugs approx. 15x per cycle instead of just once. This helps power and fuel economy by burning more of the fuel charge due to a basically 'longer' spark duration. It only works up to 3000 rpm, but that is the 'off the line' power zone needed to get the car moving. My car runs like new ! But........ I attemted to use the MSD in my N/A, but it would not work correctly. It is still mounted under my dash, but not hooked up. The timing would float around at idle about 5*, engine had a tiny misfire (heard at exhaust), and the tach would intermitantly jump around at idle and low speeds. The tach would settle down during cruise speeds. That bouncing was VERY annoying. I spent several hours on e-mails and telephone with the msd company techs trying to resovle these issues. I even got free parts replacements, but the problem persists. While operational, I did NOT notice any power (acceleration) improvements. On a 1000 mile vacation to S.F. my fuel economy went up 2-4 miles, to 26mpg at a steady 60mph, due to heavey traffic. The supras start immediatly anyways, so that feature (quicker starts) does not improve. Any thoughts? Anyone have these troubles with theirs. Anyone have one that works great?
