Default 1983 corolla 5mge project.

so basically i am donating my engine from my supra seeing as i am going 1uz.
the car is an auto 1983 corolla with 4ac.
the engine is a 84 5mge block, with an 84 head i had machined and polished.
were blocking egr. and going carbs we think that one will be cheaper but 2 would be funner.
.w58 ,new clutch. probly custom drive shaft.

just put in new valve stem seals in today and next weekend i am going to install the rest of the valves.
the next weekend will come head gasket, and egr block off. and maby the carbs.

were not looking to make power, just to have a 5m with carbs. the car was 400 dollers and the engine is just sitting so we really both dont care.
pictures comin soon

lost a fabricator that was offering good free work, so with the amount of money we have for the project efi will do just fine.
the corolla was nice mint. but took a b pillar smashing, its been pulled out and the door works with a plexiglass window, but without a new drivers door it wont ever look the same LOL

Default 5mg 7MA??

So the other day I was talking to a guy that I had bought some parts off oone of his cars, a 2.5R MK3. he also had a another which he was also stripping and had a 2JZ in there looks very nice, but we got around to the MA61 with 5GE engine 2.8 6 cyl from the celica supra.

Now he came up with the idea that the 5GE is a sort of stroked motor and was very free revving and a better block than the 7Mge block. But he says the MA70 head bolts right up and is a better head than the 5G.

1) is this true that the 5G is a better block and 2) will tha 7M head bolt right on.

yes 5/6/7m blocks are all interchangeable. performance studs were never made for the 12 valve head though, 7mgte arp studs with ball bearings in the block to keep them up high enough to compensate for the head thickness, or the nuts will never get full thread. is a 5m block better than a 7m block? i would say no, almost the exact same block EXCEPT the connecting rod and crank change from the 2m (2.8L 5mge) to the newer 6m (3L 6m/7m) crank starting some time in 1986 i think? dont quote me on the exact date...
then again in 1989 the 7m blocks received a newer crank the 7m which is also a 3L crank almost the same as the 6m, BUT cylinders 2 and 5 got counter weights for the pistons, resaulting in a max RPM change in 1989+ models.
now, the 2m crank stays the same for 5mge 2.8L models until mid 1984 where all 84to86 5mge 2m cranks got slightly different bearings.

comparing the rods i would say 5m rods are the weakest, the 7mge rods have stronger bolts, and the 7mgte rods are just a little bit stronger than than.

i would also like to point out that a 5mge 2m crank snout is smaller and thinner in diameter than a 7mge 6m crank snout.:

people have put the 2m cranks on 24 heads before, results are better with the 6m crank lets leave it at that...

also the 3L 6mcrank and rods can bolt right into a 5mge block...

i am not convinced the 24 valve head is better than the 12 valve. so far i have found the 24 valve to be more of a hassle, but toyota says the head flows 10-20HP more.

What a pair of great reply's so now I know that I keep to the 7M when I need to do some work. I already have ARP bolts and I have a Cometic head gasket. I don't think I will change the engine much, I have and will replace the GE with a GTE uprated oil pump, I have a Fluidyne Ally rad and twin Electric fans to fit, Ally pulley set and some other stuff. Did I say I have owned her from new, delivered to me in Germany in 1987 with 5 kilometres on the clock.
