change engines

Hi I have a 1986 toyota supra with the 7-mge i want to drop in a the turbo engine in to the non turbo supra I was woundering if some one can give me some info on what difernent on the to engines what need to be changed to do my project, like computer, electrical or so on? An dos the non turbo tranny fit on the turbo engine. if some one can give me some advice or a web sit that would help i would appreciate it. :dunno:

thanks cody

7mge to a 7mgte is pretty much a direct bolt-on...theres no major electrical work you will have to do...though you might want to get a boost meter now that you have a turbo, teh harnesses are exactly the same...as for the computer...i think u might have to switch them..though i never made this swap it would make sense to since now you have boost...though with a piggyback or a standalone im sure you can tune the na ecu into accepting boost and yes..the na tranny does bolt-on to the turbo motor...both are 5 speeds and are the same...unless you are doing an auto to manny conversion then itll be different obviously

the harness between the 2 are not the same, the turbo harness has a few more sensors integrated into it, turbo boost, temp, etc. alot of the sensors have different connectors because of the different parameter of the sensors, differentiating them from the turbo sensor and N/a sensor. the ecu cannot be made to except the turbo boost, different chipset, the ignitor is different, the 2 manual trannys will bolt up but are not the same, the N/a tranny is very weak and synchro's are different and will tear up real quick if you do any speed shifting, which with a turbo ppl tend to do alot. Suggestion, get the harness and ecu and ignitor with the engine your getting. if not, you can get ecu's and harness's on ebay really cheap.

SupraMan1784 11-07-2005 01:55 PM

oh damn good correction...i meant to write the harnesses "arent" the same, though i thought the 5spd for the ge was the same as the gte...i may be wrong again..then again i havent done thsi swap so i wouldnt know

cody_18_06 11-07-2005 07:31 PM

so i would have to rewire the engine or will the turbo engine harness plug into the non turbo harness? and will the turbo ecu plug in or will i have to modify?

SupraMan1784 11-07-2005 07:39 PM

wait...why would u plug a turbo harness into an n/a harness? you'll only need one...once u get the turbo motor you can chuck the n/a harness you wont need it, the turbo motor's ecu should be a bolt on also since you alrdy have a turbo motor and u now have a turbo ecu...no need for modification just rip out the n/a ecu and u can chuck that too and plug in the turbo ecu

cody_18_06 11-07-2005 07:48 PM

so i wouldent have to make mods thats cool :bouncy: . i havent orderd the motor yet do you know of any good companys to buy engines from

SupraMan1784 11-08-2005 02:39 PM

try www.jdmenginedepot.com, i give these guys madd props...not only is their ware house close to me, but they give u everything in teh clip...stuff you dont even need sometimes...i dunno check them out

cody_18_06 11-10-2005 03:03 PM

I Checked That Web But They Dont Have The 7mgte Engine There.

Do You Think You Can Put In The 2jz-gte Or It Wount Fit?

SupraMan1784 11-10-2005 03:49 PM

you can put the 2j in tehre but its not much of bolt on like the 1jz is, teh motor is a little bit bigger and little bit heavier..so some extra modification can be done

WiseAssJester 11-12-2005 08:57 AM

What are the differences between the 7m and the 2jz motors?

I mean in the head and in the block its self. I see insane numbers pumping from the 2jz build, which is nifty, but I have a hard time finding information on the motor.

For the record, I'm pondering doing this swap for my car, when I find the right one.

If for nothing more then the parts availability. I can't find to many things for the 7m(internals and what not).

SupraMan1784 11-14-2005 02:32 PM

theyre pretty much totally different motors, the heads flow differently, the stock bottom ends are different...the only thing similar is that theyre both 3L, though its hard to believe u have a hard time finding info on teh 2jz.. its harder finding info for the 7m....

cody_18_06 11-14-2005 03:14 PM

ya it is hard to find info on the 7ms i cant find much on them. you should here my supra i just bought the engine is blowen so im looking for a new one thats y im asking all these questions

WiseAssJester 11-14-2005 11:10 PM

I seem to find consistant problems with getting technical information of either motor.

Materials used in construction, main journal sizes, so on so forth.

cody_18_06 11-14-2005 11:55 PM

i normally search google or msn for info it gets me some info

WiseAssJester 11-15-2005 03:13 AM

Yeah, I'm looking again and again. Yahoo, Google specifically.

I found the bore and stroke, boost levels, compression levels, ect. A very informative site(http://www.jza70.com/articles/engine...omp_chart.html).

But nothing about materials used for construction. I'd imagine its an aluminum head, but don't know for sure. Are the pistons forged? What're the rods rated to? Valve sizes.

Haha. Thanks for answering, mang.

doing 7mge to 7mgte swap is a BITCH....the 89 supra had yellow plus for the ecu and the 87 had grey plugs...THUS i had to rip the harness from the WHOLE DASH to the headlights and swap it into my 87....and change the mounts on the 7mgte with the 87 n/a mounts....and im using my w58 tranny temporarly untill i get a r154 turbo tranny....but yeah....thats the swap....
