Default Distrubtor Question

I have a 88 auto turbo and its upgraded to cam sensor and spark plug coil. Can i remove that and use a distrubtor and plug wires? Will it start up and NOT CAUSE DAMAGE?

First of all 87-92 turbo supras came stock from the factory with a cam position sensor.

87-92 non-turbo supras came with a distributor.

You could switch if you used a non turbo ECU, and wiring harness. Which would be downgrading, which is pointless.

A DIS (distributorless igniton system) is much more efficient than a distributor setup.

Can you upgrade an NA to a cam position sensor, or would you have to swap out the ECU?

Default great!!! ECU Question

Hey thank you for answering. That helps out alot. I was only thinking of downgrading because I can't find the parts or there to expensive. I'm just trying to get the car running. I'll stick with the cam set up and go from there.

1. Could you tell me if there is a way to determine if my ECU is working?


2. The spark plug coil system (if thats what its called). In order for it to work correctly all 6 plugs should be connected and should there be any other wire connected to it , going to the alternator. I'm learning and not a mechanic at all. I bought this car from a guy who was working on it and i don't know where he left off. He is helpful.

Yep along with the ecu and engine harness. Must delete some sensors like boost sensor and front knock sensor from the GTE harness though. Not worth the effort/time/money for the minimal gains.

Yep, turn the ignition key to the on position, does the check engine light turn on? If not, then the ecu is not working. If it does turn on, then bridge terminals T and E1 at the diagnostic connector. Does the check engine light flash 4 times a second? If so, it works and everything is working fine. If it flashes other than 4 times a second you have DTC's stored in your ECU which means the ECU is working, but something else is not.

Yep, each coil should have a 2 wire harness connected to it, 1 for each coil pack, 3 in all. There should also be a small gauge single wire that connects from the coil bracket to a stud on the intake manifold side of the head, this is a ground cable. I can post pics if you need them.

I forgot that i asked you this question. Sorry next time I'll ask one question at time. I'm confused.

I can't find the 2 wire harness connected to 1 of each coil pack. Do I need to buy it separatly? I just bought a new harness and its not on the harness at all.
