I need an answer desperately. My car wont start with the key. It sounds like a dead battery but when i jump it nothing happens. I've checked the position of the jumper cables each time. It doesnt sound like the starter either. It just cranks really slow. But later on today ill be on my way to get a push button starter so i can link it directly to the solenoid. Any explanations would be great. By the way, ive only had this 87 non-turbo supra for about 3 weeks now. I payed 1000 for it. It looked like crap when i first got it but TLC and cash made it look much better.

check the ignition box and the ignition cables...see if they are ok..check your ocnnections, if it cranks real slow...sounds like a dead battery...but if not check the ignition see how it is

i'm not sure about the N/A but the spec'd turbo battery is a very high amps battery (cranking power)
the service manual says it's the battery or the starter if it's not wire related

Well thank you. I'll try all. I'm changing the starter on monday either way. It's pretty nasty looking. And it's an 87 and parts will need to be changed sooner or later anyway. So i'll check on everything. And i'll post what i found for people with the same problem. And have you heard this new phenomenon that it takes $172 at pep boys for labor to replace the starter. Bit of a rip off for a simple to moderate task.

check the positive lead from the battery to the starter, if it's frayed, lose, ect, it will cause this (I've had it happen SOOOOO many times on other vehicles). After that, battery, then starter. Most of the times when you're starter goes out it just doesn't turn, so check the other parts first before dumping money into replacing something that was fine...

If you have a alarm system which came with the car make sure that it has not been activated. Other wise the car won't starr.

yeah check everything they told you to check, wires, battery.engine cranks realy slow, starter seems to be good, however the charging system may be the culprit if all of your wire leads are good.look at the alternator it may not be charging the battery system enough to start the car after you've shut it off.if the security system has been tripped the starter cut of is activated completely cutting off current to the starter.if the starter is turning slowly then the secirity system has not been engaged.

Might be easier to pull the intake to get the starter off (bummer). Yeah, the factor alarm system will kill the ignition, forgot about that, get out of the car, lock the door, and then unlcok it again with the key and it should reset it.
