Drift project
Hi guys , and ladies....
i feel like a kid that's just had his first McDonald's playground experience, i just bought a 2.5 twin turbo mk3 . the engine is sound but the car has a bit of work . 1 I'm building a drift car out of it and will have to import a lot parts for the car cause the car was never build or imported in south Africa. my first obstacle is to find out what year model it is the label on the drivers side panel was removed they tried to sell it to me as a 98 model but don't worry i got a good price for it , i check the frame and shasi code and it looks like it is a 91 model .....is that the way to go by, does the models really differ from 89-92 ? or am i missing the plot lol ... 2on the drifting side I'm doing a lot of research on suspensions but please i'm not an expert , any wisdom is welcome 3. i must presume the car wasn't taken care of and just want to give it a proper service , like timing belt ext. any important aria you would normally disregard , please let me know . this is gonna be a long project i know , but from my side , i will definitely give you feedback. whe are currently building a drift track at our resort http://www.klipbokkop.co.za and will start a drifting academy as well . I am a newbie and all the advice I can get to point me in the right direction will be much appreciated Sonic |

the way i see it, the car that you see on the d1 series
doesnt really do anything diffrent than what we do a stage 4 twin disk clutch 1 peice aluminum or carbon fiber driveshaft the stock lsd on the mk3 can take sum abuse but the rear axles is what you should watch out for maybe sum driveshaft shop rear axles? tein coilver suspensions sum serious weight reduction off the front of the car the front bumper support weighs a lot and sum decent power mods maybe go single turbo? and the proper fuel delivery system an infinite tire budget lol and youll have urself a pretty good drift car if i missed anything please add on

First start with the suspension. A drift car cant drift well without a good suspension. Then work on making the steering angle of the wheels better. Get used to drifting with low power then work your way up. You don't really need that much power to drift. For weight, you need to pretty much remove the interior and get a light weight seat. Take out the dash and make a custom carbon fiber or fiberglass dashboard with all the necessary gauges. Upgraded brakes, modified e-brake handle, modified shifter (you won't have a good time drifting with a short shifter). Thats all of the top of my head. And don't forget to rebuild your LSD.

parts
tnx guys , I'm well away now with the suspension ... the cars power is great , its a twin turbo . but the struggle is parts... i probably will have to import most of what i need.
just a question , is there other cars that use the same filters or timing belts o'rings ext. than the supra , just maybe we have that kind of model here ... i know i can get parts for the 2jz engine here... ps , tonite the stripping begins , so ill probably have tons of technical questions tomorrow . tnx for your help |

well i don't know how new you are to supra's so just some basic stuff to know.
1. you need a mls Head Gasket. w/ ARP Head Studs also since your drifting you will prolly be using high boost so the MLS head gasket depending on the brand will lower compression from 9-1 to about 8-1 (that is 7m compression) the 1JZ has a 8.5-1 im not sure what it would lower to also The 1JZ was developed in 1989 to replace Toyota's aging "Truck Engine" the 7M. The 1JZ has a short stroke and high rev limit (7500 rpm). It displaces 2.5 liters the 1JZ-GTE is rated at 280 hp at 8.5 psi of boost. In contrast, the 7M produced 232 hp with 7psi of boost. The C12A turbos have a reputation for failing at high boost (>20psi) in unmodified form. They present the first true limit to the power the engine can produce. if you would like more info look at this site http://mkiiisupra.homeip.net/1jz.html

Ive only ever heard of a few 1js blow their head gaskets. So i think he is fine with his head gasket. The 1j has a metal head gasket like a 2j does. Also the 1jz does lack a little bit of torque but it shouldnt matter once you learn to drift well. Hell even rx-7s can drift decent and they hardly have any torque, lol.

Any rear wheel drive car/truck/van can drift
Yes it does look impressive on a solo run, I love supras to death and im a toyota guy for life But I haven't seen anybody use a supra on the d1 circuit in a while, Maybe for excebition and what not, But I think we need to leave this one alone for the ae86,altezza, and the soarer They have a better fighting chance Against those damn nissans
