Default Hand Brake Light

The hand brake light inside continually remains lit even while the brake is disengaged. My cruise control won't turn on until the light goes out...very annoying on long trips.

It's an 88 turbo.

Suggestions?

The switch under the handbrake probably went bad.

or like mine, it just fell out of place. slide the seat back all the way, remove the boot and see what's going on in there.

Default Hand brake

Thanks...I'll try that. If I have problems I'm sure I'll be asking more questions. New to this fix-it stuff on cars....

Talking Real Info 4 real People (slogan of the year)

Also...the light will stay on if the brake fluid is low in the master cylinder resevoir.

BUT....the sensor in the master is to let you know that your brake pads are worn, or you have a leak, and should be checked out...before just topping up the master.

yes i had this same problem.. first: top of the brake fluid and see if that fixes it. It fixed mine right away. Mine only came on under hard braking and it was because the fluid was being pushed out to the pistons.. so i probably also have pretty worn pads. but try that first bro

Default Check Often.

Well, MY light came on 2 days ago. When I got to work, I checked the master, and it was 'just above' the min. mark.
(sensitive little sensor)

I inspected the pads on all four wheels, and found them to be about 50% worn. There were no signs of leaks anywhere.

So... I topped up the fluid, and will check my pads once a month to insure I don't get so worn that the rotors will get damaged.

Many years ago, my wife said the brakes made a funny noise on her car. 2 weeks later, when I finally had some time to pull the wheels and look at them, it was TOO LATE !!!

The pads were gone, and the rotors were almost cut in half !!!

So...ever since then, I check my cars alot. And I replace the pads at about the 25% left spot.

I just don't understand that...

It's not like the noise was all or a sudden happening... for something like grind the rotors to the cooling fins, it'd have to be happening for months...

I saw a car whose aluminum wheel were rusting because the pads were gone, the piston from the caliper was pushing on the rotor and throwing hot steel shavings everywhere. The hot shavings burned themselves into the aluminum and then rusted...

If you hear a noise, fix it... people like to think things are OK all the time.
