Importing cars
I'm looking into importing an Evo 2 or 3. I live in Florida, where there are no smog laws. How much would it be to import from the U.K. to Florida? And how much would it be to register? I'm just trying to get an idea of how much it would be to import and get on the road. Thanks all.

theres a lot of stuff that goes on with customs, getting the car shipped is no problem, but now u gotta worry about taxes, customs, and dot, customs will try to find a way to send the car back, they will get hte help of DOT in the terms of being smog legal and being able to comply with CARB rules, its a lot of paperwork and lot of patience, a lot of companies based in japan and australia ship hte cars over, but they dont help you with customs, thats the part you have to deal with, it will probably cost you about an extra 6-8g's for taxes, customs, and getting the car smog legal, the only company that i know of that helps with customs and getting the car dot legal is motorex, which is famous for importing skylines...maybe you should give them a holler to see what they can do for you

Next best option is bring it into Canada which is less restrictive with importing and have someone there register it and then drive it to wherever you are.
Biggest issue with bringing them to the US is that they have to be converted by a registered shop and that gets into the $8-10k range. |

when you say converted, i hope you mean like the engine and not the interior, that would be one reason to import one

The basics are to make it legal to US emission laws. Some other things are done as well but I am not sure exactly what they are. I'd be willing to be that if you googled for a bit you could find out exactly what needed to be done.

Consider that the UK cars have the steering wheel on the wrong side like Japan and Australia and most likely New Zealand, that would have to be considered. The car most importantly has to pass federal safety standards as well as emissions. When I was in the US Navy some people that shipped cars from overseas to the USA had to have a licensed shop in the USA allready signed up to mod the car to meet the D.O.T requirements which also included around 6-8K bond on the car before we could even get it shipped. If it has the tag allready on the car then it shouldn't be a problem. I shipped a 1973 450SE mercedes from Japan to the US that was LHD but had the US Tag in the door and it went without a hitch. Shipping was free as it was on my PCS orders. Im looking at shipping a turbo MK III over here to Kuwait in July which is going to cost me over 3 thousand dollars from the LA area, all I need to do is find a decent car that doesn't have any problems and fork over the dough.
